The last few years have brought a resurrection of the game of Poker. A few years ago it was difficult to get enough players for a table in Las Vegas, now all the top Casinos have added Poker Rooms. The popularity of online Poker has grown since Chris Moneymaker parlayed a $40.00 entry fee to the 2003 WSOP Championship and Greg Raymer, another Internet player won the Five Million Dollar 2004 Championship.
Whether you know the game of Poker or just want to learn, these sites will meet your needs. Many of the sites offer tournaments with prize packages that include the buy-in to the WPT, WSOP or other Live Event Tournaments.
LEGAL U.S. POKER SITES
One way to get around the current U.S. legislation has been to provide cash poker tournaments for a monthly fee. Since these sites fall under sweepstakes laws and regulations, the do not violate federal anti-Internet gaming acts. Unfortunately, not all states in the U.S. do not allow these sweepstakes. Currently 38 states and the District of Columbia allow tournament play for a monthly fee. The concept started with BetZip (now Pure Play Poker) and has several new entries in the market.
SpadeClub
Barry Shulman, Publisher of Card Player Magazine, reminds me of the Hair Club for Men advertisement where the spokesman says he isn't just the President, he is a member. In mid-February, during the first week following the launch of The Spade Club, I briefly played with Barry at a $200 tournament. A few hours later, he won his first Card Player Points tournament. Card Player is cashing in on the current "membership poker" craze where players pay a monthly $19.99 (or annual $149.00) fee to enter as many tournaments as they can each month. They currently offer a two-week free trial (credit card required) to give the site a try.
They even offer a FREE Basic Service where players can play for tournament entry points or cash. Spade Club Exclusive is a subscription-based poker community wherein members play for more than $100,000 in cash prizes each month. They have daily tournaments of up to a thousand dollars, and a $40,000 weekly tournament. Spades Club has many features that seperate it from other sites, most notably their use of Bounty and Hand Count Badges and their weekly, monthly and annual Leader Boards. The first 1,000 members will receive a special "1K Badge" showing up on their avatar and profilre psge. Technical support is handled by e-mail, but appears timely in their response and seems effective in their answers. The Lotto Play is not as prevailant as in PurePlay, but still is frustrating at times.

Collegiate Gaming Network
The Collegiate Gaming Network is the latest of the
Pay-to-Play sites to breach the US Poker market. Like the others in this
category, it charges a monthly fee for unlimited tournament entry during the
month. Though currently in Beta Testing, the group behind this venture has a
different marketing strategy. For those familiar with AmWay and other
multi-level marketing (MLM) endeavors, not only do players make money by
winning tournaments, they also make it by coaxing others to join. Because more
money is going back to the players through four levels of paybacks, at $30.00 a
month, it costs more to join. It takes bringing in six other players to get
ones own month paid for, so if you have good marketing skills, these
tournaments can become free rolls. There are advantages and disadvantages in
signing up during the beta testing. On the minus side, there are fewer
tournaments to play in for your $30 investment. On the plus side, there are
fewer players to compete against for the current twice-daily $50 winner take

Club WPT
The World Poker Tour is another big name organization opening a Pay to Play membership site. Club WPT offers up over $100,000 a month in tournament cash and prizes. Prizes range from Keyboard pads to week long cruises, with the occasional massage chair or shopping spree thrown in. The poker room is based on the tried and true UltimateBet skin, with some of the best pre-select action buttons of any site. The ability to minimize their table is helpful when playing multiple games simultaneously.
The big difference with Club WPT is they also offer Elimination Blackjack as part of your membership. Elimination Blackjack brings Survivor to the Pit, allowing an interesting twist to an old favorite. The membership charge is $19.95 a month ($155.00 a year) to compete in both the Poker and Elimination Blackjack tournaments.

Bluff Magazine launched this site recently. It is simply another skin of the $19.95 a month pay to play UBT/WPT site. When I tried to get my screen name GamingReview at Club Bluff, it said it was already taken. I personally do not like sites that brand themselves as one thing and are actually another, without notifying their players.
